New York is one of our favourite places to visit, not least of all because of all the amazing food experiences you can enjoy in this iconic city. There are literally thousands of restaurants to choose from. These are just some of our family favourites.
234 West 44th Street
By far my favourite New York Restaurant, this iconic venue is well worth a visit. Sardi’s offer consistently great food whether you choose to enjoy lunch, dinner or a pre or post theatre supper. The Parma Ham and Melon is the nicest I have had anywhere and I love their pasta dishes. They also make a fantastic Club Sandwich. While you might expect Sardi’s to be touristy I have always found them to be one of the more reasonably priced restaurants near Broadway and the service is absolutely fantastic. The portrait-lined walls mean that you are never stuck for conversation – sometimes you even see someone famous!
Rock Center Café
20 West 50th Street
New York 10020
The location of the Rock Center Cafe makes the prices quite high but the food is consistently delicious. I’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve eaten here, but memorable meals include a delicious al fresco lunch in the summer of 2010, Christmas dinner 2011 and a celebratory dinner on our recent trip celebrating our son’s twenty-first. I always enjoy their fresh and innovative fish dishes and their Shrimp Chop Chop Salad is one of my all time favourites. The atmosphere is buzzing and fun whether you visit in the baking heat of summer or sit overlooking the Rockefeller Center skating rink during the winter.
The Russian Tea Room
150 West 57th Street
New York 10019
I read about the Russian Tea Room as a child and when I finally had the opportunity to visit this historic restaurant I was thrilled. Decorated in rich reds and greens accented by phoenix imagery, antiques and artwork, the Russian Tea Rooms really are beautiful. The service is bespoke and the atmosphere elegant and refined without any trace of pretentiousness. We’ve enjoyed several meals here, usually lunchtime, including three of our son’s birthday brunches. Take time to peruse their wonderful list of teas – my favourite is their St Petersburg blend with its fruity caramel flavours – and choose from an extensive menu that really does offer something for everyone. Their omelettes are scrumptious and I adore their Eggs Florentine. Their desserts are extremely hard to resist and well worth the splurge.
90 East 42nd Street at Park Avenue
New York 10017
Located across from Grand Central Station under the Park Avenue Viaduct, Pershing Square is the place to visit for serious comfort food. A delicious homemade Chicken Pot Pie is one of their specialities and their hamburgers are juicy and delicious. Welcoming and family friendly, Pershing Square offers great value for money. You definitely won’t leave hungry!
152 West 52nd Street
I love the atmosphere and great service at Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain although a lot of their food is slightly too charbroiled and spicy for me. It’s one of my son’s favourite restaurants though and we enjoyed a fantastic evening here on his 21st birthday. I always enjoy Bar Americain’s salads and their lobster and avocado cocktail is just scrumptious. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. On one occasion about 18 months ago we arrived in a downpour, soaking wet and dripping, but the staff were welcoming and friendly and dispelled any of our discomfort about our appearance. If you like charbroiled dishes with an innovative twist, Bar Americain is the place to go.
301 Park Avenue
New York 10020
Located in the lobby of the Waldorf Astoria opposite the famous clock, Peacock Alley is a great place to soak up the atmosphere of this iconic hotel. We’ve enjoyed both lunches and dinners here and although this restaurant does require you to splash out a bit, it’s well worth the price of admission. The service is good and the food is beautifully presented as well as delicious. If you visit at lunchtime and enjoy seafood, try their lobster sliders.
