Last week I wrote about some of my Favourite Apple Recipes, and today I want to showcase some of the recipes I have developed using another autumn classic – pears.
Pears have been around for a long time. In fact, one of the earliest literary references to them is in Homer’s Odyssey. It is believed that they were cultivated in England from the time of the Roman occupation and we have literally hundreds of varieties of pears being grown here. They really come into their own in the autumn, and are available in abundance. Most countries in the world grow several varieties of pear, and they are even recognised by the FDA as one of the 20 most popular fruits in the USA. Lending themselves to both sweet and savory dishes alike, pears are seriously nutritious, containing potassium, fibre and large amounts of Vitamin C.
Pears are a favourite fruit in my family, and we enjoy them both raw and cooked. Take advantage of the abundance of the season and try some of my yummy recipes using this wonderful fruit.
