The Art of the Interior

Decorating your home is a very personal thing, and no matter what the fashion may be, it’s important that you surround yourself with the things you love and colours that make you happy. It can be hard to know where to start, but Deborah Heath of Design by Deborah says that “inspiration can come from anywhere, it could come from nature, a treasured object or a wonderful scrap of fabric”. In the case of The Art of the Interior at The Lemongrove Gallery, Deborah used wonderful paintings, prints and sculptures as starting points for great design inspiration.

When I first visited The Lemongrove to see this installation, the design above was my absolute favourite. Deborah has accentuated the flashes of red in the painting with the wonderful red chair at the centre of this scene.

Another idea using similar colours is shown below. The curtains are the same as in the photograph at the top, but they are reversible, and here you can see their gorgeous blue velvet side. You can also see how floral arrangements can enhance decor here and in the photograph above with the beautiful arrangement by Green Parlour.

Even challenging modern pieces can be incredibly effective inspiration for a beautiful interior. The scenes below have an edgy, modern vibe giving an elegant and luxurious effect to this installation.

Below you can see another take on this same scene, but the addition of the red chair and the accent of the blue blind and swags add colour, making the most of the striking image of Amy Winehouse at the centre of it all.

A favourite piece of art or sculpture can be a wonderful starting point for decorating your own home. Art doesn’t have to be expensive to be beautiful, and you may already have a special piece you love. If you haven’t, explore your favourite local gallery. Mine is definitely The Lemongrove!

The Art of the Interior is at The Lemongrove Gallery in Reading until 28th May.

Design by Deborah Ltd is a boutique interior design company based in the South of England, undertaking commissions for single rooms through to complete houses.

Green Parlour is a Pangbourne based florist who I personally use and recommend. Emma, the owner, was asked personally by the Duchess of Cambridge to be part of the team to arrange the flowers for her wedding at Westminster Abbey and for the reception at Buckingham Palace.
