The Gallery of Favorites – Urban Chickens

Alea of Premeditated Leftovers and I want to welcome you to our weekend blog hop; The Gallery of Favorites, a place to share your favorite posts from your own blogs.

Thank you to everyone who linked up last week. This week Alea and I are featuring Chickens in Town…Why Not? by Diary of A Small Town Earth Muffin.

Earth Muffin Mom shares how she and her family raise chickens (for eggs) in an urban setting. The post covers everything from bringing the chickens home and helping them get settled in their coop to the positive and negative points of having urban chickens. It also includes a section written by her young daughter, a grand champion at their county fair’s poultry show last year,  sharing her excitement about these new additions to the household, as well as some wonderful photographs.

Earth Muffin Mom also discusses the appalling conditions battery hens are raised in. Although, battery cages have been banned in the European Union and the UK, they are still widely used in other countries. Also, even with the ban,  hens can still be caged in ‘enriched’ cages and never see the light of day. One way around supporting this kind of industry is to raise your own hens as Earth Muffin Mom and her family are doing, or to ensure that any eggs you buy are pasture raised, free range, or organic.

Although Alea and I both spend a lot of our time writing about food, we  also have many other interests and we know that our readers do as well. The Gallery of Favorites is a place for all bloggers to share their ideas, interests and passions.

Please share your favorite posts with our Gallery of Favorites below. Include a link to your actual posts, rather than to your blog.
