trEATs-A Delicious New Cookbook by April Carter

Do you like making gifts from your kitchen for family and friends? Then ‘trEATs‘ by April Carter is the book for you!

This lovely hardcover volume is full of ideas for homemade and baked treats – from candies and flavoured nuts to cakes, condiments, infused oils and desserts in jars. Beautiful photographs accompany almost every recipe. There’s even a ‘Styling your trEATs’ section full of original gift-wrapping tips and ideas for beautiful packaging and presentation.

I met April at a foodie event in London a year or so ago and I got in touch to ask about her newest book. To avoid confusion as we are both named April, my questions are in bold type; April’s replies are in italics.

I love the recipes and desserts you created for trEATs. Where do you find your inspiration?
Thank you! Lots of things inspire me. As trEATs is all about edible gifts, I thought a lot about what I would like to receive as gift myself. I often start with an interesting flavour combination, like white chocolate and pistachio for the popcorn recipe or I pick an ingredient which has a beautiful colour like the rhubarb in the rhubarb and vanilla compote. I’m often inspired when I travel too – I discovered black and white cookies when I went to New York last year.

You also wrote a book called ‘Top of the Cake Pops’ and you have a lovely blog called Rhubarb and Rose. Can you tell me a little about those as well?
Yes, Top of the Cake Pops is a really fun book full of pop stars turned into cake pops (cakes on sticks). There is a basic cake pop recipe and plenty of silly puns – you can find Crumbye West hanging out with Britney Sponge. My blog, Rhubarb & Rose, is where I document all of my baking adventures. I really enjoy the process of photographing and sharing what I’ve made and the food related  places that I’ve visited recently.
What is your favourite recipe from trEATs?
It’s hard to pick a favourite but I particularly love the salted caramel sauce. It looks so inviting packaged up in a nice jar and people are really impressed if you can make your own. It’s versatile too – you can take it to a friend’s for dinner along with a batch of the brownies from the book or you can give it as a gift in it’s own right with a hand written tag that says ‘warm and pour over ice cream’ attached.

I have to agree, the salted caramel sauce is one of my favourite recipes from trEATs as well. Another favourite is these beautiful Almond & Earl Grey Teacup Cakes.

I think they would make the perfect hostess gift. For the recipe, please click here.

trEATs is a wonderful resource for food gifts for Christmas and all year round. The book itself would make a great gift as well!

April Carter writes the baking blog Rhubarb & Rose and loves making beautiful and delicious treats for friends, family and special commissions. She lives in London and trEATs is her second book.
