Wow, my favourite month has arrived already! No, it’s not my birthday month, but I have a soft spot for April for obvious reasons! So this week at Hearth and Soul it’s all about Great Things to Do in April, ways to make the most of what for most of us is the first month of real spring. Welcome!
At Hearth and Soul, blog posts old and new, about anything that feeds the soul, are welcome. This includes – but is not limited to – family, home, recipes, decorating, crafts, DIY, travel, organisation, book reviews, the arts and self improvement.
How are things going in your corner of the world? Has spring arrived with you?
What’s Been Happening on The Blog
I’m working on a whole lot of new things for the blog, including a mini re-design (with some help from the lovely Laura of Pixel Me Designs) and a free e-book as a newsletter sign up bonus. It’s all keeping me very busy, but I’m still sharing recipes and ideas I hope you will love.
One of my favourite recipes for teatime is these classic squares.
My Raspberry Bakewell Tart Squares recipe is an easy to make variation on a traditional British teatime treat the whole family will love. It’s super versatile, and there’s a link to a gluten free option in the post as well!
Great Things to Do in April Featured Posts
More and more, each new month feels like a fresh start to me. This is especially true for April, the first real month of spring!
This week’s Great Things To Do in April features include (from top left, clockwise):-
Plan a real or virtual vacation! Be inspired by Pam of Busy Lifestyle Gal’s Hilton Head Vacation.
Try a vintage recipe like Tracey of The Kitchen Is My Playground with her Mom’s tempting Chocolate Cherry Upside Down Cake.
Make a fresh start by dealing with those niggly loose ends. Pauline Wiles has some great advice on how to do it in Why You Should Deal with Loose Ends.
Reach out to a friend with a homemade card sent in the mail, instead of just a social media post. Linda of Paper Seedlings shares lots of wonderful inspiration on her blog, including this Butterfly on a Beautiful Day card.
Create an indulgent spring dessert with fresh fruit using this delicious Fruity Cheesecake Recipe from Karren at Oh My Heartsie Girl.
Right, let’s go!

Hi April, Thank you for hosting one of my favorite parties. I hope that your Spring is starting out beautifully! I’ve heard of bakewell tarts but have never seen what they really are. I’ll have to give them a try. I guess in the States, we just call them bar cookies.
Hi Helen, Thank you so much for the very kind compliment! Spring is starting out very nicely, thank you. I hope yours is too. The original Bakewell tarts are either pies or small tarts. My squares are an adaptation of them, but you could definitely call my recipe bar cookies 🙂 There’s a bit about the history of the originals in the post if you have time for a read 🙂
I love anything called a “tart.” Maybe it’s because it sounds so British . . .?
I love a dessert described as a “tart” as well, Michele. It reminds me of the “Queen of Hearts” nursery rhyme, and seems so much more elegant than ‘pie’. (Nothing against pies, of course!)
This week I am sharing my Espresso Cheesecake with Raspberries, Watercress Soup and Sweet Potato Bisque. Have a lovely evening! Thanks for hosting.
They all sound lovely, Marilyn. Thank you so much for visiting and sharing.
Thanks April for hosting the fun and have a nice week.
I hope you have a lovely week too, Julie!
