‘Hot, Healthy, Happy’ by Christy Fergusson PhD is a diet book like no other. With a big emphasis on the science behind weight loss and nutrition as well as a healthy dose of self esteem, Christy shares the secrets to long term health and wellness as well as how to fit into those skinny jeans.
Dr Christy Fergusson is not your typical psychologist and this is no ordinary diet book. Christy’s personal experience of health problems and weight issues led her to incorporate functional medicine in a plan that has the potential to change not just your weight, but how you look at food and nutrition as well. She addresses nutritional solutions for many common health problems and overturns diet myths, shedding light on things that the food and diet industry might prefer you didn’t know.
Although there is a lot of scientific information in this book, Christy presents it in easy to understand bite sized chunks, wittily worded so you not only enjoy learning it, you remember it as well.
I loved that this book was so focussed on empowerment and positive self image. There’s no negativity here, and the focus is definitely on health, not illness. Positive affirmations combine with common sense advice that will help you change the way you think as well as the way you eat. The 21 Day Diet is balanced and includes lots of tasty, healthy food. You certainly won’t go hungry!
While my lifestyle and the amount of travelling we do make it impossible for me to follow the 21 Day Diet strictly, reading ‘Hot, Healthy, Happy’ has encouraged me to think about the amount of dairy and gluten that I eat as well as incorporating more healthy foods in my diet. That is another thing I like about the book. In the first chapter, Christy says “Do what feels right for you and leave the rest”. There’s no all or nothing about ‘Hot, Healthy, Happy’. It’s all about looking and feeling good in a way that works for you. There’s also tons of easy, delicious and healthy recipes, from powerful green smoothies to delicious main courses and tasty desserts. One of my favourite recipes from the book is a Colours of the Rainbow salad that is filling, delicious and full of flavour.
Colours of the Rainbow

2 avocados, chopped
2 sundried tomatoes, chopped
half a medium red cabbage, finely chopped
4 ounces fennel, finely chopped
1 carrot, finely chopped
half a red pepper, finely chopped
half a yellow pepper, finely chopped
1 red onion, finely chopped
1 celery stick, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon fresh coriander (cilantro)
Drizzle of agave/honey or a few drops of stevia
Pinch of mixed herbs and sea salt to season (to taste)
Squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Mix all the ingredients together and serve.
Whatever your health or weight loss goals, Dr Christy Fergusson’s ‘Hot, Healthy, Happy’ is a great place to start.
