If you are an entrepreneur or run a small business, Pinterest has the potential to transform the way you communicate with your customers and could increase sales. It has been a major source of traffic to my website for nearly ten years. Here’s how Pinterest can help your business.
What Is Pinterest?
Pinterest is a massive, visual search engine. Although it can be social, it is not a social media network.
While Pinterest offers the opportunity to feed back on pins and reply to comments, it is not like Facebook and Instagram. Facebook and Instagram want you to stay on their platform for as long as possible.
Pinterest want users to come to them to find what they are looking for, then go off and sign up, do the thing or use the information. Unlike Facebook and Instagram, they do not mind people clicking off the platform. This makes Pinterest perfect for entrepreneurs and small businesses.
What Make a Good Pinterest Pin?
When you are looking at how Pinterest can help your business, you need to think about creating interesting, eye-catching pins. Check out the example from my Pinterest board in the picture above. Designed to advertise a sponsored post that contains an affiliate link to the sponsor’s product. It cost me nothing to post this on Pinterest, but the pin brings warm customers to the sponsored blog post and affiliate link, thus helping my bottom line.
Things To Note About This Pin
- It tracks well for SEO. As I discuss in How A Blog Can Help Your Business, good SEO is key to getting your content to rank well in search results.
- The pin is the correct size and orientation with colourful, eye catching and relevant images.
- A link to the blog post with the affiliate product link is embedded in this pin, so when someone clicks on it, they go directly to the sponsored blog post that contains the affiliate link. This post also contains useful information to help the reader.
How Pinterest Can Help Your Business to Increase Sales
Pinterest are happy for you to use their platform to sell your products, provided you are giving useful information in return. So when you are thinking about how Pinterest can help your business, don’t just link straight to a sales page that contains nothing other than a link to buy. Give the warm leads who click through some information and/or inspiration in addition to the call to action.
How Pinterest Can Help Your Business Share Your Products and Services
- Product pins showing your product in use or in a well styled still life/flat lay
- Pins that show you how to use your product.
- Pin well designed event announcements, booking pages and lead magnets
How Using Pinterest Helps Your Business
- Pinterest can boost traffic to your website and blog posts and thus place your website higher in Google results.
- Pinterest may introduce you to a new audience. Also, if people like your pins they will re-pin them to their own boards, thus introducing you to their followers.
- Pinterest can help existing customers get to know you better, increasing the know, like and trust factor.
- You make a board secret (so it doesn’t come up in search results) to share information with customers. They can add to the board as well.

Thank you April, I finally understand how Pinterest works from a business perspective and how I can make it work for me and my business and not just to browse home improvement ideas. I found the step by step guidance incredible helpful and having you on hand throughout the workshop to answer any questions as we went along made such a difference – I even created my first pin.

Knowing that April has a following of over 10k on Pinterest I knew that she would be right person to show me how to achieve the best from my Pinterest account and she certainly proved me right. She covered the basics of the different kinds of posts right through to how to get as much leverage from them as possible and how to make them work for my business to increase profitability. The training was very informative and April was happy to answer any questions I had as we went through and made it a really enjoyable experience.

I attended a Pinterest Workshop run by April recently. Having been a Pinterest user for a while I really had not realised the full potential of the platform. Following the workshop I had a much better understanding of the way Pinterest works – the way people use the platform, and how I could use Pinterest to actually promote my business and direct traffic and readers to my web site. With April’s help I also created and posted my first Pin. Following the workshop I have a much better understanding of Pinterest and how I can use it and also how I can check the data on interaction and engagement on my Pinterest Boards.

I have thought about utilising Pinterest for my VA business for a while and never really understand how to use it properly until I attended April’s training session in December. April covered all areas including setting up your profile, creating boards, use of key words to help with SEO, creating sub sections and creating pins and so much more. Her knowledge around the platform was impeccable and she was able to help and advise on creating a great profile and pins. It really opened my eyes to what Pinterest can do and how straight forward it can be. I would highly recommend attending one of April’s sessions if you are looking to use Pinterest to its full extent and reach a wider audience for your business.
