Hello and welcome to the June 2023 edition of the Hearth and Soul Link Party! As I write this the sun is shining and roses are beginning to bloom in my garden. It’s a beautiful time of year in the south of England. How are things in your corner of the world?
The Hearth and Soul Link Party welcomes family-friendly blog posts about anything that feeds the soul. Things that feed the soul may include (but are not limited to) recipes, decorating, crafts, family, home, DIY, organization, travel, book reviews, the arts, and self improvement.
The Latest
Do you have a favourite month? June is definitely one of mine. It is not just because it is my birthday month, it is the month peonies – my all time favourite flower – bloom, and the start of some really fun annual events here in the UK.
Last week I attended Chelsea in Bloom, which runs alongside the Chelsea Flower Show. It takes very little to encourage Londoners to pop up a floral arch or transform a shop front with beautiful real or artificial flowers, but Chelsea in Bloom takes things to a whole new level. You can click on the link above to read more, and you can see a short video of my day out here.
We recently spent a weekend in Paris, attending my husband Guy’s university reunion at the American University in Paris. It was lovely to be back. I shared short videos here and here, and there will be more on the blog about things to see and do in Paris after our return visit next week to celebrate my birthday. Our son Alexander and his partner Hannah are joining us part-way through too! Guy and I fly home on my birthday itself, so we are heading to Cliveden to continue the celebrations.
Oh, and I promised ages ago to share our family bathroom renovation! I have yet to do an article on the blog, but here are some photographs as a start. Before:-
And after! The first photo showing the shower was taken by me, and the following two – much better shots – were taken by my lovely photographer Terry Joshi.
I’m so pleased with the results! Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen, especially Keith Wyer for the plumbing work and project management and to Ian of Grant and Stone for the design.

Do you dread having your photograph taken? So many people, particularly women, really dislike having their picture taken. I have hints and tips to help you feel really comfortable in front of the camera and happy with the resulting images too.
In celebration of National Vegetarian Week, I put together a collection of Easy Vegetarian Recipes with something for everyone, whether you are a vegetarian, flexitarian, or confirmed carnivore. Some of the recipes have vegan options too. There are also lots of Summer Salad Recipes you will love. Or treat yourself with some delicious Chocolate Orange Brownies. Last but definitely not least…
Don’t miss this Crunchy French Bread Egg Pie. The ‘pastry’ is made of softly sautéed onions, cubes of French bread or baguette, vegetable stock and egg so it has almost crouton-like edges and is incredibly flavourful.

Can’t wait to check out this posts, photos and recipes more in depth. Although my birthday was in May, and I had the best celebration of my adult life, I don’t like hot weather, never have. I’d have to say my favorite month is October – that is when it’s getting crispy cool, the New England foliage is in its prime, and the smell of apple cider, pumpkin spice and the promise of Thanksgiving and Christmas are heavy in the air. Just the anticipation of all that beauty and refreshment keep me going through the summer dog days. Right now in New Hampshire USA it’s only in the 50s lol A chilly weekend which was preceded by a couple of days near 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Happy Birthday friend, make a wish and make it count.

Thank you so much, Mrs B! I love the autumn as well, as I definitely prefer temperatures around 75°F or under.

Hi, April! So much good here per usual!
I love the blue and gold combination in your bathroom!
All the highlights are lovely. How grand and gorgeous the Chelsea flower events are and you can never beat Paris! How fabulous that a trip there was part of your birthday celebration! Happy birthday!
This week I’m linking up two new recipes on gfe: my gluten-free version of Katharine Hepburn’s brownies (very little flour makes them extra rich and fudgy!) and crustless gluten-free cheesecake (no flour at all in this recipe) to which I decided to add some mini chocolate chips. Both were yummy treats but I’m glad I had folks to share them with–if you know what I mean. 😉
Have a great week! Enjoy the rest of your birthday celebrations!

Thank you so much, Shirley. We really like the blue and gold as well, although I must confess the gold finish is hard to keep water-spot free! I’m always in there with a microfibre cloth 😂 I love how it looks when it’s shiny though.
Thank you for the birthday wishes too! I was so lucky to get to spend so much time in Paris.
Your gluten free brownies and cheesecake sound delicious. I like the idea of a crustless cheesecake as it’s healthier too!
I hope you have a wonderful week as well.

Your bathroom looks amazing. I love the tub. But the toilet, I never seen anything like that before. What a great idea!
April Harris says
Thank you, Catherine. I really like the built in toilet too, it hides all the pipes etc, and it’s great to have the storage in the rest of the unit.
