In Romancing The Ordinary, published in 2002, Sarah Ban Breathnach wrote about celebrating the everyday. She writes about celebrating the things that are “right under our nose” but that we take for granted. It’s these every day things that make daily life extra special, particularly in these challenging times. Welcome to the Hearth and Soul Link Party! If there was ever a time for romancing the ordinary, it is definitely now.
Whether your blog posts are old or new, as long as they are about things that feed the soul, they are welcome here at The Hearth and Soul Link Party. Things that feed the soul may include (but are not limited to) recipes, decorating, crafts, family, home, DIY, organization, travel, book reviews, the arts and self improvement.
Romancing The Ordinary
Fresh strawberries, the smell of the garden after the rain, hot coffee in the morning, a soft shawl thrown round our shoulders as we feel an evening breeze, all of these things are ‘ordinary’ but special, all at the same time. Even in these challenging times, we can still find joy in things like this.
Enjoying a delicious meal in the evening is one of my favourite ways of romancing the ordinary.
This Beef and Vegetable Stir Fry with a Spicy Sauce is an easy, make your own take away supper that the whole family will love. There’s a gluten free option too! If there are fewer round the table than normal, leftovers have delicious possibilities which I share in the post as well.
I also enjoy romancing the ordinary by making homemade cakes and enjoying them with comforting cup of tea. I’ve also popped a few care packages on the doorsteps of friends and neighbours to brighten their days as well.
This Banana Gingerbread Loaf with Ginger Glaze is one of the loaf cakes I have made most frequently over the last few weeks.
Thank you all for visiting and sharing your wonderful content. I really do appreciate all your support of Hearth and Soul!

I do love your recipes, Miz Helen, and the stories behind them as well! Thank you so much for all your support. Take care and have a lovely week.
Like everyone else in the world, I read Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Simple Abundance book but I have not read any of her other books. I love the idea of this one, although it seems in alignment with Simple Abundance for sure. We definitely need more of this kind of thinking and comfort right now. Your Banana Gingerbread Load sounds amazing, April. Gingerbread doesn’t get nearly enough attention IMO. I could eat it every single day!
I’ve linked up my newest recipe, gluten-free Crustless Spinach Quiche, and an older favorite, gluten-free Crustless Raspberry Pie. Both use produce of the season in a very delicious way!
Thanks so much for hosting, April. I always appreciate your positive outlook on everything!
Hugs,
Shirley
Thank you so much, Shirley! I do try to be positive wherever I can, although I confess I have my moments! Sarah wrote a few books around the time of Simple Abundance, and I do love this one. Thank you for the compliment on my recipe! I look forward to yours! Hugs xo

I love the idea of romancing the ordinary. A glorious sunrise, a new bloom, a bunny munching in the yard–they all brighten our spirits.
This is so true, Barbara! I’m so pleased it resonates with you as well. Take care and have a lovely week.
We bought more fresh strawberries this weekend, enough to give me a stomachache from eating too many on Saturday. 🙂
There are lots of strawberries in the UK this year as well, available to everyone as so many of our “summer season” events have been cancelled. There’s nothing like a good, fresh strawberry, right from the field! Have a lovely week, Lisa!
Thanks for hosting the party and enjoy the week April.
Thank you for visiting, Julie! I hope you have a lovely week as well!
Hi April
My cable cut out when I was leaving a comment this morning, so I’m not sure if it went through? I will have to look for this book as I have her first two books and enjoy her writings
Your .banana gingerbread cake looks so good! I have to try that combination next time.
Oh no! I hate it when the internet goes down, Pat! I think I saw another comment earlier, but I am so pleased that you came back to check, thank you. I think Romancing the Ordinary is still in print. I hope you can find a copy. And thank you for the compliment on my banana gingerbread cake! Have a lovely week.

Hello April,
