Spring Decorating Ideas

Think about what you would like to achieve
Take some time to consider how you want your home to feel. Start a Pinterest board photos that inspire you – you can always make it secret – or collect photos from magazines in a mood board or two to determine exactly the look you want. Depending on how big a project you want to undertake, you may also want to collect some paint, fabric and wallpaper samples. That said, you do not have to undertake a huge project to refresh your home a little. A few smaller updates or simple changes can make a big difference.
Be inspired by the colours of nature
Accent colours such as aqua blues, greens and yellows can uplift any interior, either against a neutral background or go all out as we have here. Use pieces you already have around your home if you can as we have with the vases and Lladro figurine on the table to my left. Pillows, soft furnishings, light weight blankets and other decorations are always great spring decorating ideas.

Combine pattern and colour
Surrounding yourself with colours you love is a great way to lift your spirits. Don’t be afraid to combine patterns, textures and colours in a way that pleases your eye.
Bring the outdoors in
Bring a beautiful piece of outdoor furniture inside to blur the edges between the garden and your home. It also can add an interesting texture and shape.
Experiment with paint
If you are nervous about introducing a radical change, be daring with paint. It is a job you can do yourself, it is inexpensive, and easy to correct if you don’t like it. Paint is one of the most frugal and yet most transformative spring decorating ideas!

Look at lighting
Introduce light with spring decorating ideas that are clean and refreshing. Consider incorporating sheer fabrics, linens and open weave textiles to help bring more light into your home. Make the move from ceramic to crystal and glass. Also, take a look at how you light your home and consider new light fittings, lamps or lampshades if your budget allows.

Dress your home with flowers
Nothing’s says Spring more than fresh flowers. Visit your local florist to buy arrangements that are simple and vibrant or create some of your own. Use a mix of seasonal flowers or try using all the same type or colour of flower displayed in a glass container with a beautiful ribbon wrapped around it.

Decorate tables, sideboards and shelves
The shelf in our kitchen was styled by Holly Scott, bringing in spring colours with a Majolica floral arrangement my late parents received as a wedding present. Holly taught me to look at levels, play with height and think about creative ways to stack and display books and other items. Add some greenery to really bring spring into the display.
The photo above (and many of the other photographs in this article) were styled and taken by my friend and brand photographer Terry Joshi. While I know this basket arrangement is not something you could leave in place long term, it remind us bringing nature in can really add a touch of spring. Think pretty bowls of apples and pears or citrus fruit, a few branches with blossom in a vase or a tiny bud vase holding a spring flower or two.
Declutter to create space for your spring decorating ideas
Spring is the perfect time to declutter, and a little effort can go a long way. You don’t have to do everything at once – even sorting out your desk or a few drawers can lift your spirits and create space in your home.

Decorate with artwork and paintings
Use paintings and artwork to bring neutral palettes to life or provide a focal point in a room. Feel free to move your artwork and paintings around, or rotate them seasonally if you have somewhere to store pieces that are not hanging up at the time.
This beautiful painting by Roberta Tetzner makes me smile every time I look at it. It hangs in my library all year round.

Easy Tips to Help You De-Clutter and Move On

Comments & Reviews
I love the fabric! I’ve been itching to bring some color into the house and ditch the snowflakes made by the kids.
Me too, Barb! I really like the contrast of pattern and bright colour. I’m definitely ready for Spring, that is for sure 🙂
We’re going the paint-a-room route this spring. Need to freshen up the colors!
Painting is a great way to freshen things up, Scott. Happy decorating!
All are great tips! I am on a mission to declutter my home; to get rid of all of the “stuff” we tend to acquire. I think it will be liberating!
It really can be liberating, Teresa, that is for sure!
I agree on the 12-month rule. If you haven’t worn it in a year, you really don’t need it.
This is definitely true, Rosey!
We are working so hard to de-clutter! I feel like I can’t function when there is clutter everywhere. We painted our house about 10 years ago, so it is getting to be about time to re-paint our rooms. It would be nice to refresh the house with some new colors.
De-cluttering really can be challenging, Marysa. A fresh coat of paint can really perk things up though 🙂
You had me at low cost. What a great selection of furniture pieces, and f they are less expensive, then it works for us!
Thank you, Mitch 🙂
Great minds think alike. I’ve been filling in some holes and scrapes in our wall this week to prepare for some painting. I’m still debating on the colors but will be deciding soon. You made me rethink my color scheme a bit.
Glad I could help a little, Kristi. There’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint to brighten things up 🙂
Deborah and April, I agree, spring is the ideal time for this. Last spring we updated a room and it was, well, life-changing is perhaps too strong a word for it, but it did make a tremendous difference in our daily life.
It really is amazing how much an update can refresh things, Jean. I know exactly what you mean!
Lots of good ideas, I especially think flowers liven up any room or area. Thanks so much for linking up with me at #AThemedLinkup 14 for Spring Crafts and Decor, open March 29 to April 10. All entries shared on social media if share buttons installed.
Thank you, Dee!
Nothing’s says Spring more than fresh flowers. I love your style!
Thank you!
Everything really looks amazing, I love it!
Thank you!
I’m working on the de-cluttering tip, one paper file at a time. Love the color tip as well.
Thank you so much, Nancy! I have been decluttering this morning too. I hope your decluttering goes well!
The colourful painting by Roberta stands out so well against the grey textured wall. And I was pleased to see Dear Mrs Bird at the top of your book pile – I’ve just finished reading it and enjoyed it very much!
Thank you, Hilary 🙂 It felt like the room was truly finished when we put the painting up. It’s almost like it was meant to go there! I’m so glad you enjoyed Dear Mrs Bird. It’s not often I read a book twice, but I did! Yours Cheerfully, the sequel, is very good too. I was delighted to read there’s a sequel, Mrs Porter Calling, coming out in May.
I shall look out for Yours Cheerfully and Mrs Porter Calling – thanks for the suggestion!
It’s a pleasure, Hilary! I always like to share book recommendations – and I’m happy to receive them too 🙂
These spring decorating tips are so inspiring! I love the idea of bringing outdoor furniture inside and using nature-inspired colors. Fresh flowers and decluttering are perfect for a spring refresh!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the spring decorating tips, Kellie. Thank you for your lovely comment!
