Welcome to the April 2023 Edition of the Hearth and Soul Link Party! We are welcoming brighter days here now that our clocks have gone forward for British Summer Time. The garden is coming to life, and it feels like spring has sprung. We are definitely getting an early taste of April showers. It feels like it has been raining for days – but knowing how many places are desperate for precipitation, I’m feeling very blessed.
The Hearth and Soul Link Party welcomes family-friendly blog posts about anything that feeds the soul. Things that feed the soul may include (but are not limited to) recipes, decorating, crafts, family, home, DIY, organization, travel, book reviews, the arts and self improvement.
The Latest – April 2023 Edition
How are things in your corner of the world? Our main bathroom renovation is finished, and we now have a little break until mid-June when the kitchen renovations start. I’m just waiting for the professional photos of the “after” of the bathroom so I can share our journey with you – and I will be sharing our plans for the kitchen soon too!
Speaking of professional photographs, Terry Joshi and I had a wonderful day photographing some new recipes last week. Terry is a very talented photographer and food stylist and I cannot wait to see the results of our shoot. I’m so excited to bring you lots of new content!
My husband and I celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary (and my husband’s birthday on the same day) in early March. We had a lovely day together and a beautiful evening at Cliveden House Hotel.
Our meal was exquisite, and we had the whole dining room to ourselves for most of the evening. It was a wonderful celebration. We also spent a weekend celebrating with our son and his partner at their home in Ely, Cambridgeshire.
March also marks the 34th anniversary of the day I immigrated to England. I’m so grateful to be a proud citizen of both the United Kingdom and Canada.
New On The Blog
There’s lots of new content on the blog this month, just in time for the April 2023 edition of Hearth and Soul. If you are a history buff or a fan of Downton Abbey, don’t miss my updated post Evenings at Highclere Castle. I’m sharing our visit to the latest evening event at the castle, a Valentine’s champagne and canapés evening, which my husband and I attended in February. There’s even a photograph of us inside the castle this time!
I made my husband’s favourite Mocha Cake to celebrate his birthday. By the way, there’s also a delicious gluten-free version of this cake available.
If, like me, you are trying to eat less meat, you may enjoy my blog post about Easy Ways to Eat Less Meat. Also, from a self care perspective, I’m talking about the importance of taking time out and how to do it.
On the travel front, I shared some updated posts on the Emerald Isle, in honour of St Patrick’s Day.
Simnel Cake is an easy to make, light fruit cake, with a marzipan topping. There is also a layer of marzipan in the middle, making it especially moist and delicious. Commonly eaten in the UK at Easter time, and it would make a lovely addition to your Easter celebrations.

Hi April! Happy Anniversary to you and your husband! (How amazing to have that dining room to yourselves most of the evening!) Happy Immigration Day to you as well!
Visiting such a place as Highclere Castle during the evening is a whole different experience, I’m sure. My closest comparison (which is not close at all) would be my candlelight tour of Biltmore House several years ago. The evening event had a completely different feel and vibe. Romantic and elegant. Your Highclere evening visit must have been absolutely perfect for Valentine’s Day!
Following UK bloggers always teaches me so much. Both you and Gluten-Free Alchemist have introduced me to Simnel Cake!
This week I’ve linked up two of the gluten-free March Muffin Madness recipes. Pineapple Coconut Muffins and Carrot Cake Muffins with Honey Cream Cheese Frosting. There are two of the most popular recipes to date. Your Banana Streusel Muffins with Flaxseed are also in the top 5. Yay! Thanks so much for graciously participating this year!
