Thank you to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for sending me an advance digital galley copy of Mrs Porter Calling for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Book in photograph purchased by me for my home library.
I really can read anywhere, and although I was very grateful to have the pleasure of reading an advance copy of Mrs Porter Calling by AJ Pearce, I could not resist reading an actual copy of the book. Like all the books in this series, it is a real page turner, and I devoured it in record time, part of it whilst sitting in our vintage Rolls Royce Silver Shadow in the sunshine at a car rally!
Emmy and Bunty are back in smashing form in Mrs Porter Calling, the third volume in the Emmy Lake Chronicles by A J Pearce. Emmy is the very successful agony aunt at Women’s Friend Magazine, helping her readers navigate the challenges of life on the home front. When the owner of the magazine dies and leaves the publication to his socialite niece, the much loved magazine and the team who write it are threatened. The story follows Emmy, her co-workers, and friends as they attempt to save the magazine they love and their jobs as war rages in Europe.
There are lots of twists and turns in this engaging story, and plenty of heart warming and heart breaking moments. The characters are relatable and soon feel like old friends. It’s the kind of book that will make you laugh out loud, but be sure to have some tissues handy too.

I loved Dear Mrs Bird and Yours Cheerfully, the first two volumes in this series and Mrs Porter Calling is every bit as good. AJ Pearce researches her books thoroughly and one of the things I enjoy about all the books in this series is how much I have learned from them about the day to day lives of women in World War 2.
Did you know that in most cases, there was no consideration made for childcare for the women who worked in the factories during World War 2? Of course, nurseries as we know them today simply did not exist, so if a family member was not around to help out, childcare outside of school hours was pretty much non-existent. Also, should the woman’s husband die in the fighting, not only was she devastated, she was likely to end up practically destitute if she did not have a job herself. These are just the start of some of the issues that AJ Pearce brings to light, whilst still telling an engaging, page-turner of a story that will stay with you long after you have finished it.
Mrs Porter Calling is a book that could stand on its own if you have yet to read the first two volumes in the series, but this warm, funny, and poignant tome is also a perfect compliment to them. I highly recommend it.

April, thank you for the book review! I am off to order this book. Yes, sadly I have read in the past about the challenged women faced then, much like the women before them and still today.
Have a beautiful day and enjoy your bank holiday!
I am so glad you enjoyed it, Elizabeth! I hope you are enjoying your holiday Monday too. Have a beautiful day!
I am fortunate enough to be able to read anywhere too (in fact I like to read in the car while my husband drives; which I know many people can not do). This sounds like such a great book– I have never heard of this author/series before.
I wish I could read in the car when it’s moving, that is a real gift, Joanne! I hope you enjoy the books if you read them 🙂
I love WWII Historical Fiction! I saved this to my Kindle Unlimited library. And decided to read Dear Mrs. Bird first I can’t wait to start reading. Lol.
Thanks so much for sharing your review with Bookish Bliss Musings & More Quarterly Link Up dear friend.
Me too, Paula and I hope that you enjoy this book as much as I did. I warmly encourage you to read the first two books in the series before this one as I think it enriches the experience of Emmy’s world. Yours Cheerfully is the sequel to Dear Mrs Bird. And wonderful news – there’s fourth book coming in August called Dear Miss Lake! Thank you for hosting the link up, my friend!
