Love shrimp? So do my family and I! Shrimp are so easy to prepare – especially if you buy them peeled and deveined – and they cook up in minutes. My easy shrimp recipes are perfect for quick weeknight suppers or relaxed weekend entertaining.
Shrimp are a nutritional powerhouse, containing high levels of protein, healthy Omega 3 fats, selenium, vitamin D and vitamin B12 . They are also very low in calories. Of course, how you prepare shrimp makes a real difference to the calorie count. I’m never going to recommend breaded, deep fried shrimp as a health food! However, boiled, baked or sautéed in a bit of olive oil, shrimp are definitely feel good food that is good for you.
Up until recently, shrimp did have a bit of a reputation for high cholesterol but research has proven that eaten in moderation they can form part of a healthy diet unless you have serious cholesterol or heart issues.
It’s very important to make sure that your shrimp are sustainably fished. Wild, trap caught shrimp are generally considered the best. Be careful of imported farmed shrimp which may have been treated with antibiotics. However just because fish is farmed doesn’t mean it’s bad – fish farmed in inland ponds or in fully recirculating or open systems can be absolutely fine. For more information, check out the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch or Marine Stewardship Council websites.
There are so many ways to enjoy shrimp and these easy shrimp recipes are three of my favourites.
