I have always felt that Valentine’s Day was about way more than just romantic love. It’s a wonderful time to celebrate our love for friends and family as well as our partners. A more inclusive celebration means we can also involve the kids – and what a great way to teach them about the importance of love and kindness. Also, we must not forget to celebrate self love. As Lucille Ball said “Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”
Ideas for Valentine’s Day Celebrations
Dress Up Your Home
Pop a pretty Valentine’s Day wreath on your door, like this one from Green Parlour, or make your own using this Instagram tutorial. You could also craft a heart garland for indoors.
Brighten Someone’s Day
One of my favourite ideas for Valentine’s Day celebrations is to take a little treat to elderly neighbours or anyone who you think could use a little extra love in their lives. A small box of tea and a package of shortbread tied with a ribbon could really brighten up the day. A friend might enjoy a small posy of flowers, or a pretty hand towel paired with a beautiful bar of homemade soap. You could also call a friend or family member just to say hello.
Solo Celebrations
Self-love is something so many of us need to work on. Being on your own on Valentine’s Day is no reason not to celebrate. Spend a little time doing something you really enjoy, whether it’s taking a long walk, reading a book or doing something creative.
Do Something Creative
If you are at home with the kids, why not spend some time making Valentine’s Day crafts?
Foodie Ideas for Valentine’s Day
Host an Impromptu Afternoon Tea
My Grandma’s Scones take less than half an hour to make and bake, and are a great idea for Valentine’s Day celebrations. The easy recipe is perfect for making with kids as well. If time is really short, you could always buy some heart shaped cookies at the grocery store or your local bakery.
Make Your Own Pizzas
Whether you are celebrating on your own, as a couple or with family and friends, this is a really fun idea. You can buy ready made pizza dough if you do not have time to make it from scratch. Shape the dough into individual serving size heart shapes. Put some toppings in bowls for everyone to help themselves. Making your own pizza creation can be especially fun for kids – and they are more likely to eat them as well! If you do not fancy pizza, why not try making some other heart-shaped foods?
Celebrate With A Partner
Our busy lives mean it can be hard to keep the romance alive in a relationship, but time together relaxing over a delicious meal can help. Check out these Date Night Ideas and Recipes. With quick and easy ideas for all skill levels and frugal suggestions as well, they are perfect all year round, not just on Valentine’s Day.
Indulge In A Delicious Dessert
Whether you are celebrating solo, with a partner or with family and friends, one of my favourite ideas for Valentine’s Day is to indulge in a delicious dessert.
Try St Clement’s Custards made in heart-shaped dishes. These light, creamy desserts have a refreshing citrus flavour.
If you have a bit more time, my Chocolate and Blueberry Pudding Cake makes the perfect Valentine’s Day treat. I like to make this one in a heart-shaped casserole, but any casserole will do if you do not have a heart-shaped one to hand. Leftovers keep well in the fridge for a day or two.
If you fancy a lighter dessert, try my Raspberry and Rose Jelly and Cream.
Happy Valentine’s Day
However you celebrate, I hope you will enjoy a day filled with all kinds of love!

Thank you so much, Wendy. I love to think of Valentine’s Day as about so much more than just romantic love (although that is lovely too!). Hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day.
We used to make heart shaped personal pizzas with heart shaped pepperoni for the boys on Valentine’s day. Pretty sure they’d all roll their eyes at me now.
Oh that sounds lovely! What a fun thing to do with kids for Valentine’s Day, Joanne 🙂
